'Perfect Storm' Hits Publishing Industry

The so-called 'Perfect Storm' is crushing the publishing industry in the current economic downturn.

Folio Magazine reported that Source Interlink profits were down 640 Percent. (Source Interlink is the publisher of enthusiast magazines such as JP Magazine, Off-Road Magazine, and Petersen's 4Wheel & Off Road.) Source Interlink CEO Ousted.

Sam Zell, the CEO of the Tribune Co. put it best about the state of the publishing industry in a memo reported in Folio Magazine. "It has been, to say the least, the perfect storm. A preciptous decline in revenue and a tough economy have coupled with a credit crisis, making it extremely difficult to support our debt. All of our major advertising categories have been dramatically impacted." The Tribune Co. which publishes the Chicago Tribune and the Los Angeles Times recently filed for bankruptcy protection.

In a down economy, the first expense to be cut is advertising — the lifeblood of a magazine, but this is no ordinary recession. The economic impact on the publishing industry has been widespread. Other off-road publications have been forced to take similar action. Publication of J-Rations Magazine is indefinitely suspended. 4x4 Builder Magazine also has not published an issue recently.
